After the Oct 14 AI selloff: who's best positioned to rebound
marketaidesk-note
Quick answer
A qualitative read on which AI names hit on 2026-10-14 look best placed to recover, which deserve caution, and what to watch before calling a bottom.
The 2026-10-14 selloff was a macro event first. A hot September CPI print revived fears of another Fed hike, yields jumped, and the selling landed hardest on AI and other long-duration growth names (we covered the day itself in why AI stocks sold off). The Nasdaq-100 tracker QQQ closed at 728.95, down 2.0% on the day, and the semiconductor ETF SOXX fell 4.5% as of 2026-10-14 (source: Yahoo Finance). What the day did not bring was a wave of fundamental bad news across the group. That distinction matters for what comes next.
All prices below are closes as of 2026-10-14 from Yahoo Finance daily data. "Five sessions" means the change from the 2026-10-07 close.
Rebound candidates (a qualitative read, not a probability model)
| Ticker | 2026-10-14 move | Five sessions | Close | Rebound profile |
| NVDA | -3.2% | -6.8% | 221.30 | Moderate-to-high upside, best balance |
| GOOG | -1.7% | -1.1% | 343.65 | Moderate upside, most defensive |
| SNOW | -6.3% | +0.7% | 335.08 | High, relative strength intact |
| COHR | -9.2% | -21.3% | 263.32 | Very high, aggressive |
| LITE | -9.3% | -19.3% | 896.33 | Very high, extended |
NVDA. The best balance in the group. It fell far less than the optical and infrastructure names on the day and over the week, which says buyers were still defending it. If the market stabilizes, the stocks that held up best during the selling are usually first to recover.
GOOG. The conservative choice. A 1.7% drop on a day like 2026-10-14, and only about 1% over five sessions, shows how little of the AI-speculation premium sits in the price. Less downside, and likely less snapback.
SNOW. A sharp one-day hit, but over five sessions it was roughly flat as of 2026-10-14, which is real relative strength against a semiconductor ETF that lost almost 11% over the same stretch.
COHR and LITE. These had the biggest drawdowns, roughly 19% to 21% in five sessions. Lumentum's CEO said on 2026-10-09 that its AI optical components are sold out through early 2029 (Bloomberg via Quartz), so the demand story did not change on 2026-10-14. But both stocks had run hard into the selloff, and both closed at the very bottom of their daily ranges. The important distinction: a bigger drawdown means more room to recover if buyers return, not higher odds that they will. NVDA and GOOG have the stronger relative performance; COHR and LITE have the bigger potential swing in both directions.
Where we would be more cautious
- NBIS, down 10.1% on 2026-10-14 and 21.6% over five sessions. AI cloud builders are capital-intensive and depend on financing markets, which is exactly what a rate scare pressures.
- IONQ, down 9.5% on the day and 24.0% over five sessions, a speculative name where the stock had little support on the way down.
- ASTS, down 10.5% on the day and 30.5% over five sessions. Piper Sandler cut it to Neutral on 2026-10-13, citing SpaceX's direct-to-cell push and launch-pace risk (Investing.com).
- MU, down 4.1% on the day but 16.0% over five sessions and closed essentially at its session low, even with AI memory demand as the long-term tailwind.
What to watch on Thursday
As of 2026-10-14, COHR, LITE, ALAB and CRDO all closed within a few cents of their session lows (ALAB down 7.7%, CRDO down 9.6% on the day), so no intraday reversal had started. Signs that selling is easing:
- The Nasdaq and the semiconductor group stabilizing instead of gapping lower.
- Higher intraday lows than 2026-10-14 in the names above.
- Prices reclaiming the day's VWAP and holding it into the close.
If these names break their 2026-10-14 lows (COHR 261.90, LITE 893.88, ALAB 299.19, CRDO 179.00), the correction is probably not finished.
Bottom line
- NVDA is the single best short-term rebound watch: smaller damage, stronger relative performance.
- COHR is the aggressive version, and only after buyers visibly return.
- GOOG is the conservative option.
One more point. Many of these names move together, so owning several of them is less diversification than it looks. A portfolio heavy in AI hardware felt 2026-10-14 all at once, and it would feel the next scare the same way.
